About our labs

The Malaysian Liver Foundation are proud to have the first pathology laboratory in Malaysia to be accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), Australia. This accreditation formally recognises that the laboratory meets international standards for medical testing.

The Molecular Research Laboratory (MRL) is the research arm of the Foundation and was established in April 2000. This initiative aims to improve the quality and availability of laboratory tests for both patients with liver disease and scientists carrying out research in the hepatobiliary field. Since its inception, the MRL has been systematically preparing for ISO 17025 accreditation. As the local authorities and Singapore counterparts were not ready to undertake the ISO 17025 audit for medical testing, the MRL sought accreditation from NATA.

After a process of auditing by three NATA assessors, the MRL was granted ISO 17025 accreditation in October 2003. In 2005, the MRL was granted ISO 15189 accreditation and reaccredited in 2009 and 2012. This means that all tests performed at MRL are in accordance with NATA requirements, and fulfill all the international quality standards. Clients who use the MRL’s services can be assured of accurate, reliable, reproducible and high-quality testing services.

As the MLF is a charity organisation, the aim for the MRL is not to make a profit but to provide a service to physicians, patients and researchers at an affordable cost.

Molecular Research Laboratory Launching

The Molecular Research Laboratory (MRL) was officially launched on the 4th of April 2000 by the Minister of Health, YB Dato’ Dr. Chua Jui Meng. MRL is the Malaysian Liver Foundation’s innovation to spearhead molecular research to a higher level. It will serve as a unique central laboratory to provide innovative test to the clinical, research (clinical trials) and pharmaceutical industries.

MRL aims to circumvent current inadequacies in molecular diagnostic testing raised by the medical profession such as:

  • Clinicians managing patients with hepatitis are often frustrated with the unavailability of high-end testing laboratory to help them make important management decisions for their patients
  • Concerns regarding the quality, reliability and inconsistency of the test results provided by some laboratories
  • Cost factor as almost all such tests are very expensive and are therefore not readily accessible to most patients

MRL gives its assurance to the rapidity, reliability, reproducibility and quality of the test results it send out. Being a not-for profit organization, our aim is not to make profit but to provide a service at affordable costs to our clinicians, scientists and researchers interested in hepatitis.

Since its launch, the MRL has enhanced the professional capabilities of the Malaysian Liver Foundation, has and will continue through testing services, become another source of regular income for the Foundation.
