Message from the President
Y.Bhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Haji Mohd Ismail Merican, President

The Malaysian Liver Foundation (MLF) was launched by our Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, who is also our Patron, on 13 August 1997. Since then the MLF has been very active in educating the public on hepatitis and liver cancer. The public awareness campaigns have taken the MLF to various states in Malaysia.

Apart from such public forums and seminars for doctors, the MLF has also conducted hepatitis screening programmes, provided vaccination against hepatitis A and B at subsidised rates and counselling sessions. Our efforts have been rewarded with very enthusiastic response from both doctors and members of the public. We hope to cover all states by mid 2001.

Apart from conducting education and training programmes for both the doctors and the public, the MLF is also involved in research especially in hepatitis and liver cancer. Clinicians managing patients with hepatitis are often frustrated with the unavailability of high-end tests to help them make important management decisions for their patients. Also, there is genuine concern regarding the quality, reliability and inconsistent of the test results provided by some laboratories. Cost is also a factor as almost all such tests are very expensive and are therefore not readily accessible to most doctors.

The setting up of the Molecular Research Laboratory by the MLF is really to address some of these concerns that we have. Knowing how important molecular diagnostic tests are in hepatitis management and research and sensing the lack of expertise and commitment to provide such tests in this country because of the high infrastructure cots and lack of expertise, the MLF has decided to take up this challenge to set up the laboratory. The MLF has decided to take up this challenge to set up the laboratory. The MLF gives its assurance regarding the rapidity, reliability, reproducibility and quality of the test results. Being a not-for-profit organisation, our aim is not to make profits but to provide a service at affordable costs to our clinicians, scientists and researchers interested in hepatitis.

The MLF would like to thank Asiatic Development Berhad for their very generous contribution towards the setting up of the Molecular Research Laboratory and to YB Dato Chua Jui Meng, the Minister of Health, for his encouragement and unwavering support for the activities of the Malaysian Liver Foundation.

We hope the MLF can make a difference in the field of hepatitis management and research with the setting up of the Molecular Research Laboratory. We hope to collaborate with the Ministry of Health, the Universities, the Private Sector, professional organisations and non-governmental organisations in spearheading excellence in the management and research of liver diseases not only in this country but also in this region.
