Hepatitis Day: Penang
The Malaysian Liver Foundation and the Penang State Health Department jointly organized the Penang Hepatitis Day on 10th June 2007. The event was successfully launched by YAB Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Chief Minister of Penang at North Zone (Ground Floor) of Queensbay Mall, Penang. The launching ceremony was a very lively and colourful affair, which attracted a large crowd and received wide press coverage.
Amongst those present at the launch were Dato' Dr Nor Shahidah representing the President of Malaysian Liver Foundation, Dato’ Dr Robert Ding, Organising Chairman & Vice President of Malaysian Liver Foundation, Dr Teh Lei Choo, Director of Penang State Health Department, members of the Organising Committee and the various sponsors.
Activities that were carried out included blood tests for hepatitis A, B, and C and vaccinations for hepatitis A and B. The Hepatitis C antibody test attracted a large crowd, as the test was free of charge for the first 100 adults. A public forum on “ ABC of Hepatitis ” was held from 2pm to 3pm on Sunday 10th June 2007 at the same venue. Dato' Dr Robert Ding spoke on Hepatitis A, B and C and the forum ended with a lively interactive Q & A session between the speaker and the curious audience. Other activities that were organised included poster exhibition contributed by the Penang Health Department, quiz, and entertainment by magician, MLF membership drive, and counselling for the public by doctors.
Dato’ Dr Robert Ding, Vice President of MLF chaired an evening symposium on Hepatitis at the E & O Hotel held on 9th June 2007 and it was very well attended by about 100 doctors. The first speaker was Dr Tan Soek Siam, Consultant Hepatologist from Selayang Hospital, who spoke on the management of chronic hepatitis C and ended her lecture with an interesting case study. The last speaker, Dato’ Dr Robert Ding then updated the audience on the current management of chronic hepatitis B and illustrated his lectures with some interesting cases of Chronic Hepatitis B. There was a lively discussion between the audience and the speakers during the Q & A session. Bristol Myers Squibb sponsored this CME event and the buffet dinner.
Overall the Penang Hepatitis Day 2007 was a resounding success, and the MLF would like to extend its appreciation to the organising committee, sponsors, doctors and nurses.
