Hepatitis Day - Alor Setar

The Hepatitis day for Alor Star jointly organised by the MLF, the State Health Department of Kedah, and the Alor Star General Hospital was held on 23 - 24 November 2007. Lectures for General Practitioners and Doctors from Kementerian Kesihatan were organized on 23 November 2007 from 7.30pm to 10.00 pm at StarCity Hotel. The lecture was chaired by Dato’ Dr Muhammad Radzi B. Abu Hassan, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist and Head, Department of Medicine, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. The first lecture was given by Dr Kiew Kuang Kiat, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, Department of Medicine, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah and the second lecture on the Current Management of Hepatitis B, was given by Dato’ Dr Robert Ding, Consultant astroenterologist & Hepatologist, Island Hospital, Penang. It was attended by 40 participants.

 

On 24 November 2007, a campaign on Hepatitis for the public was carried out at Ground Floor, Main Entrance, Star Parade Complex from 10 am to 5 pm. It was launched by Y. Bhg Dato’ Abdul Mukthi Bin Abdullah, Datuk Bandar, Majlis Bandaraya Alor Star, who represented YAB Menteri Besar Kedah Darul Aman, as he had another appointment. The Deputy Director of State Health Department, Dr. Hj. Juita Bt. Ghazalie was also present.

 

The activities included a public forum, blood screening for Hepatitis B (Rapid Test), immunization for Hepatitis A, B & A+B (special rates), counseling by doctors, poster exhibition, membership drive and quizzes. During this campaign, 87 persons had the rapid test for Hepatitis B of which one tested positive and was referred to hospital. 21 persons had hepatitis B vaccination and 3 had hepatitis A&B combo vaccines.

 

This successful awareness campaign was made possible with generous contributions from Bristol Myers Squibb (M), GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Schering Plough, Roche (Pharma), Rotta Pharmaceuticals with assistance provided by staff of Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Kedah.
